The Kirkpatrick Model: Using VEO to Evaluate Training Outcomes

training

VEO enables organisations to make training more effective. Our unique video-tagging software lets businesses see the results of their training being implemented in job roles across various sectors, including corporate, healthcare and education.

Today we’re discussing how this change in behaviour can be demonstrated and tracked using VEO, in the context of the Kirkpatrick Model.

What is the Kirkpatrick Model?

The Kirkpatrick Model is a framework to evaluate the effectiveness of training. It was developed by Donald Kirkpatrick in 1959 and is often used as a guideline for training evaluations.

The model is designed to determine the success and return on investment (ROI) of a training programme in delivering its intended benefits, therefore demonstrating its value to business stakeholders. This can help inform decisions about future training and budgeting within an organisation.

The model has four levels:

Level 1: participants enjoy the training

Level 2: participants learn from the training

Level 3: participants enact their training back in their work

Level 4: the changed behaviour (in other words, level 3) leads to achieving the desired goals of the training.

Enacting Training

Feedback from customers has shown VEO to have great success in the context of the Kirkpatrick Model, particularly in moving from the passive levels 1 and 2, through to where the real value is achieved in Levels 3 and 4.

Levels 3 and 4 are significant because here, the benefits of the training are seen in their true context, which is exactly what VEO can demonstrate. By recording and tagging videos throughout and following training programmes, progression can be clearly evidenced.  This builds value onto training delivery and courses by ensuring it results in positive changes in action and habit.

VEO creates and evidences the training’s real added value back in the workplace – the true purpose of investing in training in the first place!  Therefore, using VEO as part of your training closely aligns it to the overarching organisational goals.

When used in conjunction with face-to-face training, here are the specifics of how VEO helps learners to achieve levels 3 and 4 of the Kirkpatrick model.

1. Capture real moments using video

VEO captures real moments using video which can then be evaluated and shared. Video gives a shared platform for understanding – it reveals exactly what happened, meaning it’s both honest and accurate. Participants, assessors and stakeholders alike can therefore see for themselves the changes in an individual’s skill following training.

To make recording and sharing videos even easier you can use the VEO Capture app. It allows you to record videos using any smart device with a camera and upload it straight onto the VEO portal ready for tagging or sharing with whoever you choose.

2. Tag videos to clearly show progression over time

VEO’s video tagging functionality can be used for feedback, assessment or evidencing behavioural change.

You can use both pre-made and personalised tags on any video you’ve created or that has been shared with you by another user. In the case of a training programme, users can create a tag set according to competency frameworks for easy assessment.

LV= General Insurance use VEO to do exactly that. They follow the International Coaching Federation competencies to ensure their leaders are trained in line with a global standard, so they’ve tailored their video tag sets to follow these.

3. Evidence-based

When a video is tagged in VEO it generates statistics on strengths and areas for development which are then displayed under each video. These can be compared between an individual’s videos to show progression, or across training cohorts to inform future training and other potential interventions.

This allows you to deliver more targeted training where needed, which means less time and resources are wasted on areas where your team already excel.

4. Easy to share remotely

Our user-friendly platform makes videos easy to share both within and between organisations, even if they are at opposite ends of the earth!

Your VEO videos are only shared with people you choose to share them with though. Your privacy is our main concern, that’s why our platform is completely safe and secure.

This means that you can enjoy the benefits of being able to carry out remote observations. For one, it drastically reduces travel time and expenses as it’s no longer compulsory for colleagues to travel for face-to-face training observations.

5. Adaptable

VEO can be used in virtually any training context.

At LV= General Insurance, VEO is being used in corporate training across several departments to improve skill and competence. You can read more about how LV= are using VEO here.

And at Sunderland University they’re using it for paramedic practice training.
